Support Groups

Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario has a large network of regional support groups for people living with Parkinson’s, their Carepartners and loved ones.

Support Groups provide a positive and supportive environment in which people can be themselves knowing that their privacy and confidentiality will be respected.

At a support group, you are encouraged to share your feelings and experiences with group members.  Participation is voluntary.  If you simply wish to listen, that is respected.

A group can be a very effective tool for enhancing your ability to cope with the challenges of Parkinson’s.  A typical meeting may include:

  • Sharing new resource information
  • Tips on coping with aspects of Parkinson’s
  • Support a group member going through a difficult time
  • Listening to guest speakers on an issue relating to Parkinson’s or caregiving
  • Socialization – knowing you are not alone!

Exercise Groups

Exercise is an important part of your plan to treat and manage Parkinson’s disease.  It provides physical and mental benefits to enhance your overall well-being and quality of life.

Certain types of exercise are particularly helpful to build strength, improve balance and develop better posture.  You can also improve your mobility and range of motion, making daily life easier.

Studies have shown exercise to reduce the risk of Parkinson’s and to slow its progression. 

Exercise can help you avoid isolation as many people exercise with a group of friends or family, making exercise a social activity.

You may want to consider some of the following:

  • Yoga
  • Physical and occupation therapy
  • Aerobics
  • Rock Steady Boxing (no contact)
  • Dance
