“I didn’t want people to just see me as someone with Parkinson’s disease. I wanted them to know me as Ed the artist. When I paint, I can slow right down to virtually no shaking”
Meet Ed Roach.
Ed was diagnosed with Parkinson’s during a routine check-up when his doctor observed concerning symptoms and advised that it was no longer safe for him to drive. The news was sudden and life-changing, marking a significant loss of independence and freedom.
As he reflects on his diagnosis, Ed shares the emotional impact of living with a progressive condition, acknowledging the frustration and moments of depression that can come with it, especially as he considers how it may continue to evolve over time.
An artist at heart, Ed finds one of the greatest challenges in how Parkinson’s affects his ability to create. Despite tremors and physical limitations, he remains deeply connected to his identity as an artist, finding that when he paints, his movements can sometimes steady, allowing him to continue expressing himself.
Ed is determined not to be defined by his diagnosis. He values the support of his friends and focuses on being known for his art rather than his condition, holding onto the sense of self that has always been important to him.
He continues to adapt creatively, open to exploring new forms of artistic expression as his needs change, and encourages others to find activities that bring purpose and fulfillment.
Ed’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and choosing to contribute positively despite challenges.
